HONOLULU (Thursday, May 14, 2015): For more than 30 years, Oahu’s summer surf season has been defined by one event that has become synonymous with the hollow, long lefts of Ala Moana Bowls: The Local Motion Surf into Summer, May 22-25.

This summer, the World Surf League has teamed up with Local Motion to include a QS1000 rated event, which offers valuable regional ratings points for Hawai‘i surfers who are working their way up the World Tour ranks. The WSL-rated Local Motion event will run Friday, May 22, and crown a champion Saturday, May 23. The Local Motion Surf Into Summer amateur divisions will run May 23-25.

With top names like Ezekiel Lau, Mason Ho, Kalani David and Seth Moniz, this event is highly anticipated by local pros while maintaining the entry-level experience for amateur athletes through the Pro-Am division. Surfers from Hawai‘i, North America, South America, Japan and Europe will compete.

Recently appointed WSL Hawai‘i’ Youth Mentor & Development Officer, 6x Triple Crown champion and Waianae local Sunny Garcia will be on-hand at the event debuting his new role.

“For me, it’s exciting because it’s something new, something I’ve always wanted to do,” says Garcia of his new role. “I’ve been a competitor my whole life, I’ve been on the fence, wondering when to make a transition; and there’s no better time than right now.”

With years of experience and a well-respected reputation, Garcia speaks about the one thing he hopes to give back to surfing. “Knowledge. Knowledge is everything.”

Event organizer and General Manager of Local Motion’s retail division, Tim Mock, is proud of the event’s tradition and how, after 30 years, it still upholds its mission to provide surfers of all ages a venue and opportunity to surf good waves.

“There is no way this event continues for thirty years without all the support from local surfers,” Mock says. “Bottom line, it is important to Local Motion because we want to support Hawai‘i surfing, that’s what gets us excited! We’re hoping this helps the local pro surfer by reducing some of the need to travel extensively in order to accomplish their goals.”
