Da Hui Beach Clean Up Rescheduled

Beach Clean up rescheduled to  Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 8:30am.

Due to heavy downpours and flooding – for safety reasons, we had to cancel the beach clean up and rescheduled it for this coming Saturday, November 16, 2013.  Same time, Same Place – with no rain, please.

The storm was sporadic and didn’t affect other beaches from Waimea Bay down to Haleiwa as much as it did on the Northern tail of the North Shore.  So beach parks from Waimea Bay down to Haleiwa were cleaned.  Mahalo to the Aikau Ohana and the Eddie Aikau Foundation for taking care of Waimea Bay, The surfers at Chun’s Reef and Laniakea and the Surfrider Foundation at Haleiwa Beach Park.  The beach clean up will continue from Sharks Cove up to Malaekahana.

Mahalo to everyone for your support and sponsorship!  We’ll give it another try this coming Saturday, November 16, 2013.   We will also be offering ho’okupu with Button’s Ohana around lunch time – around noon.  Our film crew will capture the ceremony from Paradise Helicopters.  One of the keiki from the Hui O He’e Nalu hit it on the nose by saying “Aunty Mahina, maybe Uncle Buttons didn’t want us to have the clean up today so he can be home for it”….Buttons supposed to have arrived today in Hawai’i.

WHY ARE BEACH CLEANUPS IMPORTANT? Hawai’i’s coast and waterways have historically been collecting spots for annual accumulations of trash and debris. This debris, if not removed, can be harmful and even fatal to all manners of marine wildlife, can damage our state’s economy, and can even become a human health hazard.  Da Hui, along with Sustainable Coastlines, Kokua Hawai’i Foundation and the Eddie Aikau Foundation – our Beach Clean Up is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them, and to have fun!  Last year, 600 participants collected 2.85 tons (5,700 pounds) of trash.  Of the trash collected, 750 pounds of plastic will be diverted from the landfills and converted into bottles by Method Cleaning Products
