Ezekiel Lau (Honolulu, Oahu) has won the Junior Men’s and Moana Jones (North Shore, Oahu) has won the Junior Women’s in the 2013 HIC PRO Junior event at Queens surf break in Waikiki. The HIC PRO Junior is a $5,800 ASP Junior Pro Men’s and Women’s Event and is part of the 12th Annual Duke’s Oceanfest, running August 17th to August 25th.
The Junior Men’s Final ran on Monday in clean but small 1 to 2 foot surf, making big Zeke Lau’s win that much more impressive since the 19 year old stands over 6 feet tall. “It was a challenging day, I knew I had to get good waves”, said Lau after the win. “I had fun, took out a fun board and just made it happen.” Lau earned $2,000 for his first place win, second place and $900 went to Roy Carvalho, Ej Mitsui took home $600 for third place, and 15 year old Imaikalani Devault finished in fourth place with $500.
The Junior Women hit the water first thing this morning, with small and glassy conditions setting the stage for a challenging and competitive final heat. Bailey Nage (North Shore, Oahu) took the lead early on, surfing fast and light on some of the bigger waves of the heat. She was followed closely by Moana Jones who was keeping busy with snappy turns on the inside rights and lefts. Unfortunately, as conditions slowed mid-heat Nage was caught in an interference situation over a left-right peak. A point deduction bumped Nage, giving the win and a $1,000 to 14 year old Moana Jones. Bailey Nage held onto second place and $400, Meah Collins (San Clemente, CA) took third and $250, with Maluhia Kinimaka (North Shore, Kauai) finishing in fourth place with $150.
