Join Da Hui for the 9th Annual North Shore Beach Clean Up

Beach Clean up starts Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 8:30am

Pre-clean up meeting at Turtle Bay Lawn at 8:00am for clean up instructions and information.  The beach clean up will commence from Kawela Bay to Haleiwa and Kahuku, approximately 15 + miles long, covering roadways, bike paths and over 15 plus popular surf spots and beach parks making this the largest beach clean up on the North Shore and within the State of Hawai’i.  Many of the world’s top professional surfers such as Kala Alexander, Makua Rothman, Myles Padaca, Keali’i Mamala and other pros will be there to give back to the North Shore community.   Mahalo to our major sponsors: Quiksilver, Oakley, Hurley, Volcom, Oneill, Nixon, Rip Curl & RVCA for making their continued support!  Our event wouldn’t be as successful without them!  Established Foundations are also teaming up with us this year.  We’d like to welcome once again Sustainable Coastlines, Eddie Aikau Foundation, Kokua Hawai’i Foundation and the Surfrider Foundation Hawai’i for joining us once again this year!

HIGHLIGHTS

The members of the Hui O He’e Nalu are inviting everyone to take part in this pro-environmental event to express our Aloha for the ocean and the community that surrounds it.  A post-clean up Winter Surf Kanikapila for the participants will offer free food & non-alcoholic beverages donated by our sponsors.  Live, local hawaiian/reggae music.  Importantly, this is a non-alcoholic & drug free event.  No drugs or alcohol will be served/permitted on Turtle Bay Resort grounds or parking area.  Again, the Turtle Bay Resort lawn (near horse stables) will be our new location for the clean-up meeting & event.  Should anyone want to set up informational booths or provide donations, please contact Mahina Chillingworth.

MISSION

WHY ARE BEACH CLEANUPS IMPORTANT? Hawai’i’s coast and waterways have historically been collecting spots for annual accumulations of trash and debris. This debris, if not removed, can be harmful and even fatal to all manners of marine wildlife, can damage our state’s economy, and can even become a human health hazard.  Da Hui, along with Sustainable Coastlines, Kokua Hawai’i Foundation and the Eddie Aikau Foundation – our Beach Clean Up is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them, and to have fun!  Last year, 600 participants collected 2.85 tons (5,700 pounds) of trash.  Of the trash collected, 750 pounds of plastic will be diverted from the landfills and converted into bottles by Method Cleaning Products
