La Ohana! Family Day at Waimea Valley

Waimea Valley will commence monthly La Ohana (family day), beginning Sunday, February 16, 2014 and repeating the third Sunday of each month through December 2014. In recognition of our kama’aina and military families admission price will be half off with proof of valid ID (Hawaii State ID, Hawaii State Drivers License, or Military ID).

La Ohana will feature a scavenger hunt, mo’olelo with kupuna, hula, lei making, petroglyph rubs, and mini tournaments every hour at Ka ‘ili ‘ili uka, the Valley’s Upper Meadow where guests of all ages will be able to participate and compete in traditional Hawaiian games which include: ‘Ulu maika (disc throwing) Moa pahe ‘e (dart sliding), Kōnane (a checkers like game), ‘Ō‘ō ihe (spear throwing), Pa Uma (hand wrestling), Kulakula ‘i (chest pushing), Kukini (foot racing) and Hukihuki (tug of war).

Demonstrations by several Cultural practitioners and artisans will occur throughout the valley as they mana’o (knowledge) of Lomilomi (massage arts), feather lei making, pohaku shaping, and kapa making, Hawaiian weapons artisan, and artful jewelers will be displaying a diverse array of weaponry and jewelry as well.

Na Mea Ono snack bar will be open, offering ’ono picnic lunches for purchase. Guests can stop by Ku ’Ono Waiwai to pick up a souvenir or gifts for friends or family as a token of remembrance of their visit to the valley.
