Garret McNamara being his work record on a 100-foot-wave

On This Day In Surfing

By Tony Heff

On This Day In Surfing. January 29, 2013, history was made once again when Garrett McNamara broke his previous world record of 78 foot (24 m) by surfing an estimated 100-foot (30 m) rogue wave at Nazare, off the coast of Portugal. “The waves were not supposed to be that big this day” described McNamara. “As I rode this wave it seemed pretty massive but I couldn’t quite tell how big it was. When I got to the bottom, turned and got around the wave and went to kick out, it landed on me and it felt like a ton of bricks, probably one the most powerful waves I’ve ever had land on me. It was pretty amazing.”
