Opening Day Pipeline

Although winter winds are typically the tell-all sign that the coldest season has arrived, a more accurate indicator here on the North Shore is the amount of dust on the helmets of photographers. Last week, Pipeline awoke thanks to a stout west northwest swell and on hand were a legion of Hawaiian heavies like Bruce Irons, Flynn Novak, Reef McIntosh, and Michael Ho. All threading hollow barrels, grabbing full rail, scrapping for the outside sets. There to capture the gore were helmet-clad photographers, more than happy to exchange dust for water. Here’s what they saw.
