Local Motion hosted its annual Surf Into Summer surf contest at O‘ahu’s iconic Ala Moana Bowls, continuing its reputation as the island’s largest amateur surfing event.
The weekend featured 10 divisions—eight shortboard categories (boys, girls, juniors, open men, women, masters, etc., covering ages from under 11 to over 35) and two open longboard divisions for men and women.
Each division held 4–6 heats with six surfers per heat. Surf Into Summer awarded trophies and prizes to the top six finalists in each division on Sunday and gave every participant a commemorative contest T‑shirt at check‑in.
Solid SSW swells pounded the bowls both days, creating challenging but exhilarating conditions for competitors—perfect surf alongside sunny skies and tradewinds.
AVVA returned as the title sponsor, reinforcing its connection to Hawaii’s surfing scene, while numerous volunteers and local brand partners supported the event’s community-driven atmosphere.
Immediately following the amateur competition, Monday and Tuesday (June 9–10) featured the annual Pro Longboard Qualifying Series. The event served as a WSL qualifier, determining Hawai‘i/Tahiti Nui regional champions and potential seeds for the 2025 WSL Longboard Tour.
Overall, this year’s Surf Into Summer brought together riders aged 7 to 70, offering a vibrant mix of competitive heats, friendly camaraderie, and community celebration. The weekend’s surf may have tested the athletes, but it ultimately delivered a memorable showcase of skill and aloha spirit upheld by Local Motion and its supporters.
