Three-time time Junior World Champ Mahina Maeda takes us behind-the-scenes of her extensive and rigorous training regimes ahead of tackling the notorious Outer Reefs, in “Na Wahine O Ke Kai”, meaning “The Women of the Sea.”
“It’s been a goal of mine to do a project like this and riding these particular waves. I hope people can watch and enjoy a different side of my lifestyle. It was a tough project trying to get the right timing, forecast, etc, as well as 6 months of training to get the goal I wanted to achieve.”
Captured by a team of filmmakers out on the North Shore of O’ahu, the video follows Mahina’s intense 6-month training regimen where she is guided by some of the world’s best (Ross Williams, Mark Healey, Kid Peligro, and Paolo Rista) across a multitude of disciplines including: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Ginastica Natural, Big Wave Water Training and Self Defense.
Her surf coach, Ross Williams, shared: “I love that Mahina is putting her energy into big wave surfing. She’s already an World Tour-caliber surfer, but it’s not in her nature to stop reaching for more. It shows how driven she is. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her excelling in big waves. This effort puts her in a very elite group of surfers that can perform in all aspects of surfing.”
