The Courtyard at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel is preparing to host The Kona Surf Film Festival presented by Altres Hawaii this weekend (Jan. 31-Feb.1). The 50th State’s premiere international surf film showcase is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an exciting lineup of international and local films, vendors, artists and musicians, like Kimie Miner, who is performing on Friday night.“The surf film festival has been around a few years and I’ve watched it grow,” says Kimie, who has performed at the festival for the past three years. “It’s a great event because it brings the community together and gives people that may not normally get to meet a chance to share their passions and lifestyles in one weekend. There were many local clothing designers, jewelry makers, art and traditional surfboard or alaia makers there, too. The night always starts off with music right before sunset. My favorite part of the event is getting a chance to meet all of these incredibly talented people.”The Kona Surf Film Festival presented by Altres showcases independent short and feature films from established and emerging surf filmmakers from around the world. The films, which highlight wave-riding in all forms, are a genre-blending compilation of documentaries, artistic expression and high performance surfing.
Perhaps the biggest attraction of the 10th Annual Kona Surf Film Festival presented by Altres Hawaii is the world premiere of Shane Dorian’s “Chasing Giants” on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. As a Kona native, Dorian’s documentation of riding giant waves is one of the most highly-anticipated parts of the event. The big wave surfer will also have a Talk Story session after the premiere alongside filmmaker, Bill Keily.
