Hawaiian surf legend Clyde Aikau passes away at 75

Clyde Aikau, the legendary Hawaiian waterman and younger brother of Eddie Aikau, passed away peacefully at his Waimanalo home on Saturday evening at the age of 75. His family confirmed his passing on Monday.

Born on October 24, 1949, in Kahului, Maui, Clyde was the youngest of six children of Solomon “Pops” and Henrietta Aikau. The family relocated to Oʻahu in 1959. Clyde and his brother Eddie shared a deep bond, united by their love for the ocean, Hawaiian culture, and family. Both served as lifeguards on Oʻahu’s North Shore, participated in separate voyages aboard the Hōkūleʻa, and were known for their spontaneous slack key guitar sessions shared with friends and family across the islands.

Following Eddie’s tragic disappearance at sea in 1978, Clyde dedicated himself to preserving his brother’s legacy. In 1986, he honored Eddie by winning the inaugural Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational at Waimea Bay. Clyde continued to compete in the event whenever it was held, up until 2016, when he was 66 years old, solidifying his own status as a big wave surfing icon.
Eddie Would Go

Beyond surfing, Clyde operated a Waikiki Beachboy service for many years and was a passionate advocate for education. He attended the University of Hawaiʻi, pursuing a degree in sociology, and worked as a liaison between the Department of Education and houseless families, ensuring children had access to school supplies, transportation, and education.

In his later years, Clyde faced health challenges, including heart issues and pancreatic cancer. Despite these difficulties, he remained optimistic and continued to support his family and community, including assisting with his wife’s dog boarding and training business.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Eleni Aikau; son, Haʻa Aikau; sister, Myra Aikau; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Aikau family expressed deep gratitude to the Hawaiʻi community and friends worldwide for their heartfelt condolences. Details regarding his memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Clyde Aikau’s enduring spirit and contributions to Hawaiian culture and surfing will continue to inspire future generations.
