The Rell Sunn Menehune contest was held this past weekend at Makaha Beach. The waves were in the 1-2 ft range which means in “grom” terms, overhead to double-over head sets. The boys and girls were charging hard in three disciplines bodyboard, shortboard, longboard and age divisions 7-9 and 10-12.
Referred as the “Queen of Makaha”, Rell Sunn was a dedicated ocean women who cared very much for the keiki in the community. Helping the kids stay out of trouble, she introduced surfing into their lives. Most notable surfer been 6x Triple Crown Champion and 2000 ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia. Rell started the Menehune contest in 1976 with trophies and surfboards she could scrounge up for prizes for the winners. She didn’t give much but gave them a chance to taste success and plant a seed of hope for their future in surfing.
