One of the most prestigious events in big wave surfing, the Peahi Challenge, is back this winter in a new digital format. The new digital event was created by Daniel Goldberg, a local Maui Big Wave surfer with 25-years of experience at Peahi. Goldberg is the founder of the Pe’ahi Hui ( a world renowned-water safety-coalition) credited with saving the lives of many big wave surfers. Goldberg and his associates are launching the first-ever digital Pe’ahi Big Wave Surf Awards. This exciting new competition, open to all big wave surfers worldwide, runs from November 1st to February 28th, offering participants the opportunity to catch the biggest and best rides of the season on Maui’s legendary north shore.
The Pe’ahi Challenge Big Wave Surf Awards will allow surfers to submit their best rides from the 2024-2025 big wave season. Without a physical live event, the season-long competition is able to showcase epic rides from every swell.
“We’re thrilled to bring the Pe’ahi Challenge back in this format,” said Daniel Goldberg. “This is an amazing opportunity for local surfers and those around the world to participate in an event that is typically limited to full-time professional big wave surfers in an invite-only-setting. This year, we’re opening the door to a broader audience and giving recognition to the men and women who want to catch the incredible waves at Pe’ahi this winter season!”
The event is open to all surfers who tackle massive waves at Pe’ahi aka “Jaws”, with entries judged based on the size, skill, and quality of the ride. Surfers will have until February 28th, 2024, to submit their best footage and photos. Winners will be selected by a panel of five esteemed judges, who have surfed Pe’ahi and are big wave experts. Prizes will be awarded in several categories, including Biggest Wave Paddle and Tow-In, Best Ride, and Breakthrough Surfing Performance.

- Surf Pe’ahi during the season (November 1st – February 28th)
- Submit your best rides and footage and photos through the official Pe’ahi Challenge website.
- Judging criteria includes wave size, style, and overall performances by men and women.
- All entries must be submitted by February 28th, 2024.
