Grassroots surfers from underserved communities to share USD $20,000
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is proud to announce its latest group of ISA Scholarship recipients. Forty young surfers from 23 countries will share USD $20,000 in funds to support their education and surfing-related expenses, including training and competition costs.
The scholarship recipients represent a diverse global community, with 22 young men and 18 young women from nations including Ghana, Turkey, Venezuela, Liberia, Jamaica, Philippines, Colombia, Iran, Sao Tome and Principe, Thailand, and Madagascar, among others.
The geographical spread highlights the ISA’s mission to expand the sport to new regions and welcome new participants and fans. Scholarship recipients are selected based on their financial need as well as dedication to both education and surfing.
The ISA Scholarship Program was established by ISA President Fernando Aguerre in 2007. Since then, more than USD $408,500 in grants have been awarded to benefit the lives and surfing careers of over 400 surfers.
Several past ISA Scholarship recipients have developed into elite, competitive surfers who have won medals at ISA events, including Daniela Rosas (PER), Carlos Muñoz (CRC), and Chelsea Tuach (BAR). Rosas qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by winning the Gold Medal in the Women’s Shortboard at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
