Big waves, weird direction, and howling winds are what you’d expect to see from the ocean when a hurricane makes itself known. Fortunately and unfortunately for Hurricane Lane, she showed her teeth while making her way to the islands but fizzled out just short of seeing anything worthwhile in surf.
For a select few who happen to be in the right place at the right time (and against the warning of Hawaii officials), Hurricane Lane offered up a short window to get some waves in the middle of the dwindling storm. The main breaks of Oahu weren’t showing much of the swell due to the S,SE angle, but the storm opened up dormant surf spots that favor the extreme angle.
