Aukan Messera and Madison Cambier won two divisions at the 29th annual Pohai Na Keiki Nalu at Launiupoko Beach Park, Saturday.
Over 200 entries, in 14 divisions, competed in 62 heats, on a day that was blessed by a small southwest swell that provided plenty of waves on a windless Launiupoko day.
Messera won two boy divisions, the shortboard 7-8 years and the boys longboard 7-9.
The 4th grader-to-be from Haiku, was smiling after capturing both divisions. “It felt super good, was super fun,” Messera said. “Winning is super fun.”
Cambier won two girls divisions, the shortboard 9-10 and the longboard 7-9. The 4th grader-to-be from Lahaina described her two wins. “I tried my hardest. Just trying to do as many turns (in the shortboard), and stay on the wave. It was pretty small, but it was pretty good.”
In the longboard Cambier had a different game plan. “It was easy, just slide it all the way in, do some tricks like the cross-step, the hand-stand, the switch stance, and stuff like that.”
Johnny Mahan won the shortboard 11-12 which with the shortboard 9-10 were the biggest divisions with 24 competitors each. He rode a wave at the end of his heat to move him from fifth to first.
“I kind of caught that wave and I was kind of thinking I need a good score on this so I just caught it and did my best,” said the Lahaina seventh-grader-to-be. “I was just surfing, trying to do as much turns as I can. “
The other shortboard winners included Moani Hovey (girls 5-6), Millie Colpas (girls 7-8), and Briana Strubhar (girls 11-12), Isaac Cardon (boys 5-6) and Brixton Craig (boys 9-10). The longboard winners included Indy Forbes (girls 11-12) and Aiden Haas (boys 11-12) while the bodyboard champions were Kalli Sprenger (7-9) and Chase Lee (10-12).
