About the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational
Held at the legendary Waimea Bay on O‘ahu’s North Shore, the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational honors the legacy of Eddie Aikau—a revered Native Hawaiian waterman, lifeguard, and big-wave pioneer who dedicated his life to protecting others and pushing the boundaries of the sport. The contest runs only when wave heights reach a minimum of 20 feet on the Hawaiian scale (40-foot faces), making it one of the most exclusive and anticipated surf events in the world.
The 2024 competition, which was called on December 22, 2024, was broadcast globally, amassing over 2 million views from 195 countries. Hawaiian surfer and musician Landon McNamara claimed victory, taking home $50,000, 350,000 Hawaiian Airlines miles, and an additional 250,000 miles for the Best Wave award.
The legacy of Eddie Aikau continues through events like this, bringing the surfing community together to celebrate the spirit of courage, commitment, and aloha.
