Youth of Surfing to Take Over Oceanside, CA October 11-18
Taking place from October 11-18, the 2015 VISSLA International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Surfing Championship will unleash the world’s best Under-18 surfers in Oceanside, CA to compete in the name of their nation.
Since the first ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in 1980 launched the career of Tom Curren, this event has been recognized as the ultimate breeding grounds for the world’s next wave of premier surfers. The ISA World Junior event has crowned the likes of Gabriel Medina, Julian Wilson, Jordy Smith, Alejo Muniz, Filipe Toledo, Owen Wright, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons, Laura Enever and Tyler Wright.
For eight consecutive days in October, the 2015 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will showcase four divisions of youth talent including: Men’s Under-18, Women’s Under-18, Men’s Under-16 and Women’s Under-16. Additionally, once every division has been completed an overall Team Champion will be crowned.
“When it comes to forward thinking, the VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship has been the preeminent platform to pick out the surfer of tomorrow,” said VISSLA President Paul Naude. “VISSLA is more excited than ever to be a part of this ISA World Championship, and to bring it back to California for the first time since 2005 is something we take a great pride in. We look forward to seeing Surfing’s top youth take over Oceanside for this 8-day event and give us a glimpse of the future.”
Last year, Team Hawaii took home the overall win with a sweep in both of the women’s divisions with Tatiana Weston-Webb taking the Under-18 Junior World Championship title and Mahina Maeda winning the Under-16. This year Team Hawaii will look to Maeda to lead the team to another ISA World Championship title.
