It’s that time of year again when we start getting ready for winter season, and I don’t mean we start hanging decorations and buying presents. I mean, we start putting together the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing issue of Freesurf Magazine. A list of staggered deadlines dots my calendar, and I have begun raiding the archives for images that entice our love for the “Greatest show in surf”, as they call it.. I came across some watershots of the Pipemaster himself, Mr. Kelly Slater, and I was painfully reminded that I most likely will not be shooting the event from the water this year. Or any year, for that matter. The only photographers allowed in the contest zone with a camera will be those hired by WSL and staff photographers of the media sponsor Surfing Magazine. The rest of us will have to try for a unique angle from the sand, unfortunately. Maybe this will change in the future, but for now, I’m just glad I got a few before they put it on lockdown. Oh well…there’s always the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout. I hope…
